Just looking for some wisdom and input from the people who know best about this topic! Rising From the Ashes I didn believe it would be so hard stop. In fact, I didn ever want to start smoking in the first place, but peer pressure and bad decisions left me with the worst habit I e ever had. After many years and many failed attempts at trying to quit, I have finally found success. The recent US tax hike on tobacco has made smoking an even more difficult habit to maintain and it makes quitting even more appealing, but the government is not doing enough to help the smoking issue in our country. Smoking should be illegal. The addictive agent in cigarettes and tobacco products, nicotine, has often been compared to the addictiveness of the deadly drug heroin. Just like heroin, the nicotine in tobacco triggers the production of opioids in the brain which, according to Jeanie Lerche Davis of WebMD, Herbal cigarettes, “are known to play a role in soothing pain, increasing positive emotions, and creating a sense of reward. “Nicotine and heroin also both become more and more addictive as use continues. Yet, Heroin is illegal in the United States while tobacco is not. Some might argue that illegalizing the practice of smoking and tobacco products would cause the government to lose money, but according to Robert Longley of Dateline, “smoking-related deaths still costs the nation about $ 92 billion a year in the form of lost productivity.” With the rise in tax on tobacco products, more and more people are quitting the use of them, which is also resulting in profit loss for the government. The government would also be saving money on healthcare since there would be less smoking related illnesses to be treated. Also, smoking-cessation aids such as nicotine gum and nicotine patches would be in higher demand and the sales of these products, which are close in overall price to tobacco products, smoking cessation, would help to make up for the revenue loss. Another concern is job loss for those who may work in the tobacco industry. This could be solved with more jobs in the smoking-cessation industry, such as companies that manufacture cessation aids, like nicotine gum and patches. If tobacco products were illegalized, smoking-cessation aids would be in higher demand, creating a need for more workers in the industry. The need for counselors would also increase since many quitters do try some types of counseling to aid in their quits. It seems that by illegalizing smoking and the use of tobacco products, our nation would be a healthier one, and our government would be saving money in the long run. It also seems that when something is found to be lethal and addictive, it is made illegal. So it makes no sense that tobacco, one of the most lethal and addictive drugs available, is still legal to purchase in gas stations and grocery stores nationwide.
